PR-1 Course in the Mountains of Virginia CR-2 Shooting Solutions.
I had the opportunity to take a PR-1 course taught by CR-2 Shooting Solutions. The course took place at Pigg River Precision training ground which is in Rocky Mount Va. Pigg River Precision is a veteran owned business situated strategically in the rolling terrain of Southern Virginia on 500 acres of pristine land. I must say Pigg River Precision is one of the most beautiful venues I have ever had the privilege of shooting a long gun on.
CR-2 Shooting Solutions PR-1 course took place on April 15 and 16 2023. The lead instructors for the course were Chris Roberts And Ruben Keenan who are both Retired US Army Sniper Instructors they were assisted by Chad which helped to keep all the students on the same page and not get lost in the sauce so to speak. The PR-1 course had 17 students that ranged in experience levels from brand new precision rifle shooters all the way to active duty military sniper. That is the beautiful thing about long range shooting and shooting as a whole for the most part. Shooting has fundamentals that every good shooter has to master and the more reps you put in with the fundamentals the better you will be. In my opinion the biggest difference between the professional shooter and the amateur is the professional has not only mastered the fundamentals but they then add time constants, stressors and above all the professional has jeopardy for each mission.
CR-2 Shooting Solutions PR-1 is a great introduction to long range shooting or a good reset for those who have a lot of experience with a long gun but wants to continue to hone in on the fundamentals again. The course started with CR-2 Shooting solutions staff members conducting a safety brief. The students then conducted a shooting drill that evaluated the shot process on the clock at a hundred yards. Chris and Ruben watched each student fire the drill and graded each shooter. After the live fire drill each student left the firing line with a shot process report form. The form we were provided will be a huge resource to each student in the future for students to see areas of improvement. I definitely will be keeping mine to refer back to as needed. Most amateur shooters don't have the opportunity to be evaluated by a professional. It is completely different having an instructor give you a course of fire with a time restraint on a range that you have never shot before. Training that gets you out of your comfort zone makes you a better shooter.
Students then took the classroom portion of the class where we went over the four basic fundamentals of precision rifle fire. We were able to get a better understanding of each fundamental with a hands on demonstration conducted by Chris and Ruben followed by a Q&A. Students were then able to shoot a string of fire through Chronographs that were provided by CR-2 shooting Solutions. After we shot 10 rounds of ammo, students were able to have good data on MV( Muzzle Velocity), SD (Standard Deviation) ES (Extreme Spread). All of these Measurements are extremely important in long range shooting. We then input all of the data in CR-2 course booklets; see below photos. We then moved into the classroom for instruction on rifle setup.
As Day 1 wrapped up we were able to shootout to a distance and confirm and validate that the data that the chronograph gave us was in fact correct. Chris and Ruben were on glass to spot our hits out to 1100 yards. I was very happy with how my Ruger Precision 6.5 and my custom built by Remington 700 6.5 creedmoor built by L3 rifles, Jon Slagle out of Augusta Ga performed. My ammo which was loaded by Garage Gunz was very consistent with a MV 2849 and SD 9.8. Day 1 came to a close.
Day 2 Opened with a live fire 21 dot drill with a cold bore shot to help solidify what we learned the day before. We then moved into the classroom for a wind and kestrel class. We learned how to use the short wind formula. We then moved up to the UKD range to watch a wind reading demo which was very cool. CR-2 instructors used smoke bombs to show students the effects terrain has on wind. I must say Pigg River was the perfect venue for this type of demo due to the natural terrain features. The Pigg River UKD range is backed against the blue ridge mountains which consist of a valley, ridge and tree lines and breaks (see below photos.)
The final portion of the course ended with instruction on positional shooting and live fire out to 1100 yards. I highly recommend CR-2 Shooting Solutions PR-1 Course to anyone that is Interested in learning how to Run a Long Gun effectively.
